Pyrophyllite is a hydrated aluminum silicate material and shares many physical properties with talc. Pyrophyllite is added to clay bodies to reduce thermal expansion, although it can be used for several other ceramics based purposes as well, such as an addition to insulating firebrick as a refractory material. Pyrophyllite is also used to lower the firing temperature of clay bodies.
