An important opacifier. It is often used in a glaze to affect acid resistance, color, and texture. Titanium dioxide’s the whiteness and opacity is due to its tendency to crystallize during cooling. People may select titanium dioxide as an opacifier over other materials such as tin oxide or zircopax because of its tendency to introduce variegation and crystallization to the color and texture of glazes, much like rutile (which also features a titanium-heavy base). In moderate amounts, titanium dioxide encourages strong melts, durable surfaces and rich visual textures.
